my story
My journey started back when I first reached out for support myself, around 15 years ago. I’d experienced multiple bereavements and upheavals in my late teens and early 20’s, that had taken their toll. I remember thinking, ‘I’m fine, it’s not that bad’ but at the same time felt low and was struggling to keep powering through alone.
I prided myself on being strong, resilient and independent, not realising that I was desperately needing compassion and support. I later realised that being independent, hiding my feelings with humour and carrying on as normal, wasn’t giving me the space I needed to actually heal.
Beginning to open up to a therapist gave me space to make sense of everything I’d been feeling. It lifted me out of a low place and totally changed my life trajectory. The therapist I worked with at the time, totally changed my perspective on how I was seeing things and I realised first hand how powerful this work is.
Meanwhile, I’d already been taking a psychology degree (naively believing I should be able to ‘fix’ my own problems because of this). I didn’t realise that there was a huge difference between theoretically understanding myself vs actually feeling, healing and being supported.
As my own healing and self-development grew, I travelled the world and took time to feel into my next steps. I’d had a life-long interest in all things human, psychology and spirituality based. I’m interested in the deep and meaningful stuff - small talk was never really my vibe. Somehow deep down I think I already knew what I was called to do. To be honest, the moment I decided to start my course in counselling, as cliche as it sounds, it was a feeling of ‘this is right where I’m supposed to be’.
There’s plenty of things I’m not the best at (reading maps or doing maths is not my strong point) but I can truly say the qualities required here come naturally to me and it means I have so much love for the job I do. Holding space for people, listening deeply to their story and seeing the missing gaps to help them heal - it’s an honour for me to do this work.
